EDMC Takes Leadership Role in Support of Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council
EDMC has taken a leadership role in supporting the mission of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council (GPLC). GPLC is a national leader in adult education and family literacy, providing educational programs for 6,200 adults and families each year in the Pittsburgh area. GPLC provides instructional programs in basic reading and language skills, preparation for the high school diploma equivalency test, English as a second language, and workplace development skills. In short, EDMC’s commitment to work with GPLC reflects its own mission: providing education that builds careers and changes lives. By supporting this organization, EDMC is not only strengthening its ties to the local Community, but helping to prepare more men and women in the Pittsburgh region for further education, fulfilling jobs, and a brighter future.
EDMC Lends a Hand During National Week of Service
Students, faculty, and staff from EDMC institutions teamed up for the National Week of Service – a week designated by every U.S. president since Theodore Roosevelt. Education Management is no stranger to Community service. Through its corporate offices and campuses, EDMC has been actively involved in food and clothing drives for the disenfranchised, raising money for charity, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, delivering appreciation packages for active duty military, supporting youth education and motivational programs, and collecting items for local homeless shelters. Last year, EDMC’s service ranged from Argosy University’s drive to benefit women’s shelters to The Art Institute of California-Los Angeles’ and Hollywood’s participation in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Tree Planting Project in Santa Monica. At EDMC, an enduring goal ingrained at each school, across every location, is a steadfast dedication to making positive contributions to the world around us.
Veterans Honored through EDMC’s Participation in Yellow Ribbon Program
EDMC is committed to ensuring that students from across a variety of Communities receive a quality education, including those who have served in uniform. To honor their service, EDMC is actively working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in the Yellow Ribbon Reduced Tuition Program, part of the post-9/11 G.I. Bill. As a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, our schools are able to voluntarily provide tuition assistance to eligible veterans to help offset all or some of their educational costs. A provision of the Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, the Yellow Ribbon Program allows degree granting institutions to fund up to 50 percent of tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate, with the Veterans Affairs Department matching the same amount.
EDMCares Supports Charitable Organizations in Pittsburgh, Across the Nation
Recognizing our responsibility to the communities we serve, Education Management has launched the EDMCares committee to support a variety of non-profit entities that are closely aligned with our mission – primarily in the areas of education, the arts, health, and human services. In September 2009, the committee participated in its first large-scale activity, raising tens of thousands from EDMC employees for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International through the Walk to Cure Diabetes in Pittsburgh. In keeping with EDMC’s mission, EDMCares also will contribute to education-based charitable organizations, including The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, Junior Achievement, and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Indeed, EDMCares is playing a vital role in helping Education Management reach its goal of building a stronger Community.
